Description
This perrenial subshrub is native to the central and eastern US, and is actually part of the rose family. It grows naturally from Canada all the way to Mexico. This short sprawling bush makes a perfect ground cover, and is a great alternative to the highly invasive rubus armeniacus, or Himilayan blackberry. Its thorns are much less destructive, and it remains short and manageable while still prividing tasty berries for foraging and for the wildlife.
Rubus ursinus has long vines that can stretch up to ten feet long and four feet tall, although usually it stays under one foot and sprawls in clusters along the ground. The small black fruit develop from small white flowers and ripen in the summer.
This shrub has the potential to take over a hillside or garden plot and provide a tasty summer treat for yourself as well as for the animals in your yard.
