Description
Also known as Oregon Wintergreen or Shallon, this evergreen shrub is native to Western North America, and grows from Southeast Alaska to much of the California coast. It is recognized by kingcounty.gov's native plant guide as "The single best ground cover for northwest gardens".
This bush can grow anywhere from 1.5' to 10' tall in a sprawling thicket. Small white flowers bloom in spring at the end of the branches, growing downwards in one direction. The purple fruit grows in winter and is loaded with vitamins and antioxidants.
With evergreen leaves that are about 3" x 2", the purple berries that fruit during summer are acrtually a part of the flower called a sepal. They have been described as tasting like a mild blueberry, and reported health benefits include treatment for cuts and burns, an infusion for indigestion, colic and diarrhea, respiratory distress from colds or tuberculosis, and as a convalescent tonic.
The berries of this shrub have not only been eaten fresh and used in jams for hundreds of years by native populations, but the elk and deer love them as well. Their foilage are an important food source for them, especially in the winter.
