Description
This evergreen perennial is native to Western North America, and occurs alont the Pacific coast from Alaska to California, as well as inland in Idaho and Montana. It is a staple of the coastal temperate rainforest of the Pacific Northwest.
This fern grows up to 6 ft tall, with its fronds growning out horizontally in the shade and more vertical in direct sun. It prefers well drained acidic soil, and while it can survive the occasional drought it will flourish with lots of moisture, cool weather, and shade.
The tribes of the Coast Salish in Oregon and Washington have traditionally used the leaves of this plant as a pain reliever. They say that this plant can soothe pain or inflammation when applied directly to the affected area, and this practice has been taken up by various groups including hiking organizations.
